Ikom
Ikom is a Local Government Area of Cross River State, Nigeria. Its headquarters are in the town of Ikom in the east of the area on the Cross River and the A4 highway at 5.96111°N, 8.71083°W. It has an area of 1,961 km2 and had a population of 162,383 according to the 2006 census.
The people of Ikom are mostly farmers. Ikom is a major producer of bananas and plantains for the Nigerian market.
Ikom is known for the Afi monoliths, artifacts that bear an ancient writing sometimes taken to be an early form of nsibidi.

Nigeria has been home to several indigenous pre-colonial states and kingdoms since the second millennium BC, with the Nok civilization in the 15th century BC, marking the first internal unification in the country. The modern state originated with British colonialization in the 19th century, taking its present territorial shape with the merging of the Southern Nigeria Protectorate and Northern Nigeria Protectorate in 1914 by Lord Lugard. Nigeria became a formally independent federation on 1 October 1960.
